Softshell

Everything you need to know about softshell

Have you heard of softshell? Softshell is a technical fabric that is wind and water resistant, as well as warm. It is super stretchy, making it perfect for adding flexibility to wheelchair clothing. This type of fabric is a top choice for those looking for flexibility and speed (making you aero!). Want to know more about softshell? We explain it here.

What is softshell?

Softshell is a woven sportswear fabric. This fabric consists of three layers. The outer layer is water-repellent and has two- or four-way elasticity. The middle layer is both wind- and waterproof and breathable. The brushed inner layer sits around your body and has a soft and comfortable insulating effect. The result is a garment that is comfortable, flexible and wind- and waterproof. And although the fabric consists of several layers, it is still very light in weight. Softshell clothing is ideal if you are looking for a versatile item that you can wear on its own, but also in combination with other insulating layers or under hardshell trousers or a jacket.

What is the difference between softshell and hardshell?

The big difference between softshell and hardshell outdoor clothing is the breathability. Softshell is a particularly breathable fabric and perfect for physical outdoor activities such as hand biking or sit skiing. The fabric is more comfortable than traditional hardshell fabric and the softer material gives you more freedom of movement.

A jacket with only a hardshell layer is lighter and more compact than a softshell jacket and acts as a water-repellent outer layer for the insulating layers you wear underneath. Hardshell is also generally windproof and more resistant to water than softshell. Many outdoor jackets consist of a combination of a hardshell layer and several layers of insulation.

Softshell keeps you dry during a light rain shower or light snowfall. A hardshell is a better choice when the rain is pouring down or when you are in the snow a lot.

Is softshell waterproof?

Let’s first briefly discuss the word ‘waterproof’. When we look for waterproof outdoor clothing, we mean that we are looking for clothing that keeps us dry. However, waterproof literally means that no water can get in or out. That would be like wearing a plastic bag. What we really want is a good balance between water-repellent and breathability. The water on the outside of the jacket should not penetrate, while moisture from the inside should be able to escape.

One of the advantages of softshell is that it is particularly breathable. On the other hand, the material is often somewhat less strong in repelling water. The result: functional outdoor clothing with a water and wind resistance, which is also breathable and warm - and flexible and super comfortable!

Is softshell warm?

Yes, softshell fabric adds warmth. For softshell to function as an insulating layer, it must be lined or you can wear extra layers under your jacket. Our softshell jackets and leg covers are lined with technical insulation, which provides the warmth you need to stay comfortable during your outdoor outing.
